The Sundance cross country team finished their season this past week as they competed in the state cross country meet in Cheyenne. The Bulldogs had six runners compete and all put forth their best effort.
“Times were not quite as fast as we had hoped, but all of the high school athletes ran well and gave 100% at the state meet,” coach Anne Marie Mickle stated.
“Maddison Neiman took a little over a minute off her state time from last year, and Rylan Asheim ran his first state race with confidence. A few runners struggled with injuries on and off over the past couple weeks – one having a rough past few months – but they persevered through practices and gave their all at the state meet.”
Maddison Neiman was the lone Lady Bulldog runner at the state meet, and she crossed the finish line in a respectable 25:24.
The Bulldog boys had five seniors competing in their final race of their high school career. Senior Angel Villegas set the pace for the Bulldogs, finishing with a time of 20:28. Teammate Kyten Johnson also competed in his final race, finishing on Villegas’ heels, with a time of 20:36.
Rylan Asheim competed in his first state meet clocking in at 22:42. While seniors Jager McLaughlin and Wyatt Flahaven rounded out the varsity team, finishing the race with times of 23:15 and 28:11, respectively.
“All five seniors will be missed for their commitment to the team, hard work, sportsmanship and fun personalities,” coach Mickle commented.
