Valor and sacrifice

Veterans honored with handmade quilts

Two veterans were recently honored with Quilts of Valor®, handmade works of art that are offered in thanks for service, sacrifice and valor.

The Quilts of Valor Foundation places its focus on comfort and healing, lovingly creating each civilian award to offer three messages: that the veteran is honored for their service, that the foundation and its members know that freedom is not free and, finally, to offer comfort.

The first of the veterans was Richard Tebo of Sundance, who served in the U.S. Navy from September, 1960 until September, 1964.

Tebo's rank was E-4. He served on the U.S.S. Coral Sea (CVA-46), an aircraft carrier.

The second veteran was Colonel Michael Pullen of Rapid City, who was nominated by Sundance's Terry Wilkerson. Pullen joined the National Guard in 1975, right after high school, and served for 42 years.

Pullen served in many roles, from heavy equipment operator to helicopter medivac pilot and operations officer at a U.S. Army hospital, combat support hospital and at the 807th Medical Command. Before his retirement, he was the chief of staff for the 3rd Medical Command.
