Continuing the Crook County News Since 1884
Members of American Legion Post #45 gathered in front of the war memorial on Monday to receive a donation from Powder River Energy's Community Involvement Committee.
Post Commander Welchie Patterson gratefully took possession of the $500 donation, saying that the post already has ideas to put it to good use.
"We're going to be putting in our coffers for Post programs and for Girls' State and Boys' State," he said.
The American Legion Boys State and American Legion Auxiliary Girls State are annual programs for juniors that explore how government and politics work, giving youth a hands-on opportunity to act as mock city, county and state officials.
"We are planning to send at least one or two – one boy and one girl – this year," Patterson says. "Depending what we have in our coffers, we might send one or two more."
In the near future, Post #45 will begin sharing the details of this year's events with local youth who may be interested in the opportunity to attend.
