Cross country season gets underway at Mallo

The Sundance cross country team opened their season participating in the Mallo Camp meet, hosted by Newcastle, on Saturday. The Bulldog team has 15 participants this season.

Team scores for cross country are determined by the top five finishers of each team for each race. The junior high girls were the only complete team for the Bulldogs as Shae Crago, Eva Stark, Remington Johnson, Taylor Asheim and Trinity Finn all set their pace and secured a third place team finish for the meet.

The junior high boys had four participants where Mason Moeller and Tyce Erikson set the pace, finishing first and second respectively, in the 6th grade division. Nolan Gaskin and CJ Koep took fifth and eighth place in the 8th grade division. 

The Bulldogs athletes also made their marks at the varsity level; senior Bulldog Angel Villegas led the pack, placing fifth with a time of 20:57, followed by teammates Holden Ayer and Kyten Johnson who took 14th and 15th place respectively and Jager McLaughlin who finished in 20th. 

Additionally, the Sundance team had two athletes competing at the junior varsity level where Maddison Neiman finished in 3rd with a time of 29:47 and Rylan Asheim finished 7th with a time of 27:10. 

The Bulldog runners will compete again on Fri., Sept. 6, in Spearfish.
