Fred E. Schon

Fred E. Schon died August 3, 2024 in Torrington, Wyoming of Congestive heart failure. He was 87 years old.

He was born January 23, 1937 in Illinois. He was the son of a physician and surgeon, Dr. Fred E. Scho,n and his wife Evelyn. He has a younger brother, Jeff, who survives him and lives in Houston, Texas.

Fred was a teacher after graduating from college until he retired. His career and being an excellent outdoorsman took him to many states over the year: Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, Alaska, Wyoming, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Arizona and Colorado.

He especially loved all things outdoors. Very skilled in hunting, fishing, tracking, camping, hiking.

He was a personal friend of Elmer Keith, the American firearms enthusiast and author in Salmon, Idaho. The picture with the obituary was taken in 1966 in Salmon and sent into Boone & Crockett.

The shot was 193 6/8". He was a National Title .22 caliber pistol champion.

Fred liked to travel and when he went anywhere he called it his "windshield therapy". He has many photos of his adventures, had a pet fox, holding baby eagles, wildlife photos he took, animals he shot including a bear. He also loved dogs, having several in his lifetime.

Fred was also a great storyteller. He was knowledgeable, interesting and unique and had a lifetime of experiences.

I have talked with many of his friends, near and far, and they too are grateful to have been friends in his life.

On a personal note, in the early fall of 2020, I invited him to church for a singspiration event with an evangelist there. I sat next to him and I could see a change overcome him with the preaching and music. After I left, he spoke to the evangelist who let him to Christ.

The evangelist called that night with the good news and Fred called me in the morning and was excited. "Romans 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved."

He was my friend and I, Vera Ziegler, will miss him.

Fred was cremated and there will be no memorial service.
