Continuing the Crook County News Since 1884
The Wyoming Department of Corrections announced last week that inmate Fred Schon had died at the Wyoming Medium Correctional Facility in Torrington.
In 2021, the 87-year-old was sentenced in Crook County to up to 40 years of incarceration for second degree sexual abuse of a minor under the age of 13. Schon was originally charged with 52 separate felony counts of the same charge.
The incidents allegedly took place over a period of approximately four years, according to court reports. The allegations were investigated by Sundance Police Department with the assistance of the Department of Family Services.
According to police statements, Schon ultimately admitted to the allegations.
Schon pled guilty to two counts of sexual abuse of a minor in the second degree. Judge John R. Perry sentenced him to between 18 and 20 years in a penal institution for each count, to run consecutively.
Schon died on August 3 in Torrington.
Per the policy of the Wyoming Department of Corrections, an autopsy will be conducted to determine Schon’s cause of death. The department does not release protected health information.
