100 Years Ago

July 31, 1924

Good progress is reported on the well being driven on Rifle Pit Divide by a Denver company. The first sands were struck at 185 feet last week and carried oil. It is understood the bore will be continued to the second sands.

A nephew of Eddie Chatfield met with a mishap Sunday by falling from a horse and was brought to Sundance with a badly broken arm. Dr. Clarenbach was at Beulah for the day, and the lad was taken there and received surgical attention.

75 Years Ago

July 28, 1949

State tournament play will be the work for the Sundance Junior Legion baseball team this weekend. The team will enter the fight for the Wyoming championship with seven other Junior Legion teams at Casper.

The team will leave for Casper Thursday afternoon. Coach Francis Hejde named thirteen to make the tournament trip: Darrell Wham, Claire Ripley, Arlis Binney, Dan Hejde, Dick Zane, Byron Bush, Calvin Hejde, Dean Bush, Arthur Linklater, Don Roadifer, Don Blakeman, Dennis King and Howard Harvey. Harvey will serve as base coach for Sundance during the tournament.

Crook county will get a preview Sunday of the rodeo events to come later this year as the Western Saddle club of Sundance will put on a show at the club’s new corrals east of Sundance. Another event sponsored by the club will leave all horses on the side and will feature turtle-power only. A turtle race will be held on Main Street in Sundance Saturday. To the owner of the fastest turtle will go a $25 prize. Turtles may be purchased for the race from the club.

August 1, 1974

Big Horn rancher Malcolm Wallop brought his “Walking Wyoming” campaign into Crook County Monday. Wallop, seeking the Republican nomination for governor, made a swing through the county with stops in Sundance and Hulett. Wallop toured the Sundance residential and business districts Monday afternoon and later met with the public in the courthouse square. Monday night, he was in Hulett to meet voters at a lemonade party.

The second Crook County Horsemen’s Association-sponsored Playday this summer was held last Sunday evening at the Moorcroft arena. Sheila Pollard and Cleve Clark were named high point girl and boy contestants during the event and received All-Around ribbons for their efforts.

25 Years Ago

July 29, 1999

Crook County Medical Services has retained the services of two new doctors effective early September. Hospital Administrator Don Nelson is pleased with the acquisition and said, “both are excellent physicians who will provide a broad range of primary care services to the citizens of Crook County and surrounding areas.” W. Travis Bomengen, M.D., will come on staff as of September 8. Dr. Cynthia Casey is a native of Cheyenne who completed her residency at the Cheyenne Family Practice and has been in private practice at Laramie. She and her husband Paul will move to Sundance with their twin daughters, and Dr. Casey will begin practicing sometime in early September.
