Peek at the Past

This section was visited by a terrific windstorm on Friday, accompanied by rain and hail in various localities. On Pleasant Valley, the Kellogg and Haines places were victims to the extent of outbuildings and sheds. There are no reports of hail damage, but considerable hail fell on the north Bear Lodge country. Three, tourist cars came into Sundance Friday evening with tops torn off, having met the blow at Rozet.

The Campfire girls met in weekly session to climb Sugar Loaf for their monthly council fire but found it too windy so camped at the foot of the hill. They took in three new members who took the examination for wood gatherer.

The Fourth is set to be a big day in Sundance, according to plans for the celebration now being completed. Highlight of the day will be the free fireworks display to be touched off at approximately 9 p.m. at the Crook County fairgrounds. The fireworks are being sponsored by the Sundance Commercial Club as a public service feature. It will be under the direction of George Gorsuch. The show will be free to all those who wish to attend. Plans call for the biggest display of pyrotechnics ever presented on the Fourth in Sundance. Aerial bombs, sky rockets, star bursts, Roman candles, pin wheels and specialty productions will all be a part of the free show. The fireworks will be discharged on the hill overlooking the lake and, for safety reasons, spectators will watch from the opposite side of the lake. A dance will be held in the Sundance American Legion hall for the benefit of the Crook County Memorial hospital fund.

The fight against the Black Hills beetle in the Bear Lodge district of the Black Hills National Forest is in full swing, it was announced this week by George Gorsuch, ranger at Sundance. The bug spraying operations were started late last week after Congress appropriated money for the job. The action may be too late, Gorsuch said, as many of the beetles are nearly ready to fly and infect other trees. Gorsuch said that the operations in the district are limited are limited by materials and time. The project must be completed by July 10. He added that it will be impossible to complete the job by that date.

Sundance Postmaster Bonnie Beaudoin will be retiring January 1, 2000. Beaudoin began as a clerk in Sundance in 1971 and became a postmaster in 1981. In 1993 she received the award of Postmaster of the Year at a meeting in Yellowstone National Park. In 1992, while she was the postmaster, the Sundance Post Office went from second class to first. Since then, Beaudoin has overseen smaller offices such as Beulah, Recluse, Upton, Moorcroft and Rozet. Beaudoin said she will greatly miss the people and the clerks, who have all been special to her.
