Girls State

Ellie Jay, Hulett, and Shannon Gilmartin, Sundance, participated in Wyoming Girls State June 9-15, in Cheyenne. Willow Lindholm, Sundance, was elected Girls State Governor last year and presided over this year's camp.

Girls State is a week-long government and leadership camp. The Sundance and Hulett delegates' camp fees were paid for by the Roy Montgomery Unit 80, American Legion Auxiliary, Hulett. Janet Cole Lake is the Girls State Chair.

Delegates are placed in "cities" where they run for mayor, police chief, postal clerk, etc. Then they spend the week either being senators or representatives debating bills and passing bills that they wrote or they role play as Supreme Court justices, lawyers and clients in actual cases that have been adjudicated in Wyoming.

The purpose of Wyoming Girls State is to teach basic civics, love of country and support of veterans.

Ellie served as town treasurer, head of the department of agriculture, and was the recipient of an American Legion Auxiliary Samsung Scholarship. Shannon served as county assessor.
