100 Years Ago

May 29, 1924

Word was received here Monday that both the Newcastle National and the Osage Bank had closed their doors that morning. It is not known how badly the institutions are affected, but this crash is a severe blow to Newcastle and Weston County.

The Official Opening Celebration of the Wind River Canyon Road will be held at Thermopolis, July 1, 2 and 3. A big program, including exposition shows, rodeo and wild west, 40 rounds of boxing and visits to the swimming pools, dancing pavilions, parks and other attractions of the world’s greatest Mineral Hot Springs.

75 Years Ago

May 26, 1949

The siren scare thrown into Sundance was the sorrow of two young hitch-hikers from St. Louis. The men pushed the alarm signal in the city hall Saturday night. They were arrested by City Marshall Ward Cure and held in the city jail overnight. They were released Sunday morning upon promising to leave Sundance. Marshall Cure said the men testified that they thought the controls belonged to a heating unit in the building.

Miss Pauline Dillon of Sundance, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Claude Dillon, and Jesse Kanode of Moorcroft were married in a double ring ceremony on Sunday at Gillette. The Rev. Cronwell, Lutheran missionary, performed the ceremony. Mrs. Rex Dillon was matron of honor at the wedding and Rex Dillon was best man. The families were the only guests at the ceremony. The couple left for a trip through the Big Horn mountains following the ceremony.

50 Years Ago

May 23, 1974

Mrs. Alice Schloredt, Sundance, was appointed Justice off the Peace for Sundance Northside Precinct No. 1 earlier this month by the Crook County Commissioners. Mrs. Schloredt, who will serve until the first Monday in January 1975, replaces Amos Ewing, who resigned earlier this year.

A planned tennis court project for Sundance, which will be handled by the Sundance Lions Club, will not be carried out until the summer of 1975. The club said the site for the courts has not yet been determined. A club spokesman said the club must also apply for federal funds to help with construction of the courts.

25 Years Ago

June 3, 1999

A whirlwind day of activity took place last Thursday as the state’s top five elected officials arrived in Crook County to meet the area residents. Their agenda began in Beulah in the early morning. They then traveled to Aladdin with a stop at the Vore Buffalo Jump. The group continued on to Hulett then arrived in Sundance for a luncheon with local residents.
