Keyhole State Park partners with Audubon Rockies for summer events

Keyhole State Park is partnering with Audubon Rockies again this summer to provide a series of birding events at the park from May through August.

The first event will be a "Birding Walk" on May 4, beginning at 8 a.m. at the Rocky Point Trailhead. This will provide an opportunity to observe, identify and learn about the various bird species at the park. Some binoculars and birding guides will be provided, but please bring your own if possible.

All other events will be bird banding events running June through August. These events include capturing birds in mist nets, recording data about them such as age and sex and banding them for future data collection.

You won't want to miss your chance to see this process up close as bird banding can only be done by professional permitted bird banders! 

Bird banding dates: June 8, June 23, July 4, July 11, July 25, August 3.

The bird banding events take place below the dam in Keyhole State Park and run from 5:30 a.m. to noon. For more information on what to expect, where to go, and what to bring, visit wyoparks.info/keyholeevents. 

According to Audubon Rockies, spending time observing birds is the best way to improve your identification skills. Yes, there are all kinds of tips and tricks for telling similar species apart, but the best way to start is to familiarize yourself with the birds most common to the area.

During the event, participants can learn a few bird identification basics and what traits and characteristics to pay attention to.
