100 Years Ago

April 11, 1924

Secretary Banks of the Sundance commercial club received a wire from Senator Kendrick last week stating that favorable action had been taken to include the bridge at Devils Tower in the appropriations for national parks this year. This is welcome news to all Crook County and will make the Tower a favorite resort for tourists.

Although a sharp rise in the river Tuesday forced several citizens to move out, at Hulett, a drop of six inches was reported Wednesday and it is hoped that the crest has passed. The main stream was running directly through town at last report and it is feared considerable damage has resulted. Falling temperature has probably saved the town. Conditions at Belle Fourche were worse Wednesday and it is probable that the city has sustained the worst flood damage in its history.

April 14, 1949

The Sundance schools have a new superintendent. Burns E. Taft of Newell, S. Dak., was elected at a meeting of the Sundance grade and high school boards Monday. Taft signed a one-year contract at a salary of $3,800. He will take over his position, August 1. Taft will follow R. E. Anderson in the superintendent’s office. Anderson resigned as superintendent, of the Sundance schools last January.

Donald Blakeman and Robert Policky, both juniors at Sundance high school, have been selected as representatives of Sundance in the annual Boys’ State to be held in June at the University of Wyoming recreation camp at Centennial, Wyo.

April 4, 1974

Monday was April Fool’s Day but the Sundance City Council was in a serious mood Monday night when it finally gave approval to a record $149,342 budget to operate the city during the 1974-75 fiscal year.

April 15, 1999

The latest wet snowfall and freezing conditions proved to be hazardous for six semi-trucks on Sunday, April 11 on the Cundy Hill area of I-90. Five accidents involving six vehicles within a twenty-minute span resulted in the closure of the east and west bound traffic lanes for several hours. The first accident occurred at approximately 2:30 a.m.
