100 Years Ago

March 13, 1924

It has been announced that Fort Meade at Sturgis will be reopened, and that by May 1 there will be five hundred cavalrymen there. An inspection of the fort was made recently, and it is now being put in readiness to receive the soldiers.

Contingent on the construction by the government of a road from Elmore to Savoy, a distance of four miles, Lawrence County will build a 16 foot grade from Cheyenne crossing to EImore, a mile and a half. If this construction work is undertaken, it will be the initial work on what, it is hoped, some day will be a highway extending through the length of Spearfish Canyon, one of the most beautiful pieces of scenery in America.

March 17, 1949

Merle Sisson is the new commander of the Sundance Veterans of Foreign Wars post. Sisson was elected to the post at the meeting of the group, March 11. Before the election Sisson was a vice-commander of the veterans' organization. At the meeting Cecil Crago was named senior vice-commander while Emerson Pickerd was chosen junior vice-commander. The post advocate for the coming year will be Ted Rounds and the new quartermaster of the group is Kenneth Weaver. Other officers elected at the meeting were Rex Dillon, trustee, and Gordon Byrd, chaplain.

You may have to prove just who you are and how long you have lived in Crook County the next time you go to buy that Wyoming hunting and fishing license. The selling agents of the Wyoming Game and Fish commission have been instructed to demand documentary evidence from applicants for resident licenses or permits to certify that the applicant has actually been a resident in the state for at least one year immediately prior to the date of the application. The order is in line with the commission's drive to prevent residence licenses from being sold to non-residents.

March 18, 1999

Levi Ellsbury, Sundance High School senior, has been selected to participate in this year's Down Under Bowl in Australia. He will be playing in an American football tournament featuring All Star State teams from all over the United States. Levi is a member of Wyoming's North Team. He will leave on June 13, and return June 25. In addition to going to Australia, he will get to visit New Zealand and Hawaii during the trip. Levi, the son of David and Beth Ellsbury, said he was thankful for the chance to represent his school, state and county in this. "It's a once in a lifetime opportunity," he wrote.
