Peek at the Past

Ben Weaver was butchering a beef last Sunday. There will be lots of nice canned beef in the neighborhood for use next summer. We believe the people of the Farrall community come about as near supplying their meats both cured and canned for the year as any neighborhood we know of.

Coasters on the hill facing West Avenue Friday evening met with an accident when a toboggan ren over a pile of telephone poles. Misses Jessie Vines and Flora McWethy were badly injured and shocked, the latter sustaining a severely torn ligament of one ankle. The accident was unusual and will be rigidly guarded against in future.

Henry Goodson, who for a number of years has been government trapper, has resigned his position and purchased the general store at Clareton. Mr. Goodson has gained a reputation as one of the most successful trappers in the northwest. During his term as government trapper, the value of furs turned in by him has exceeded his salary by seventy-five or more dollars a month.

To help meet the unprecedented storm emergency Crook County Commissioners allocated $10,000 last Friday in order to participate in state relief funds on a 60-40 basis. The county appropriation will mean that $15,000 will be available from the state. The funds were allocated to be used in the opening of county roads, to get feed into livestock and to aid stranded and snowbound ranchers. Emergency relief operations have changed so rapidly in the past week and a half it is difficult to keep up with what is going on. Reports have been received from the County Commissioners and County Agent in Newcastle about a meeting that was held there by representatives of the Holzworth Construction Company of Miles City, Montana on Monday evening. The report indicates that the Holzworth Construction Company has contracted with the army to conduct the Emergency Relief work throughout this area. While headquarters of this district is Gillette. a branch office is being set up in Newcastle and there is a possibility that a branch office will be set up in Sundance. Relief operations have been moving very slowly in the county. Fall’s caterpillar was dispatched to the Rifle Pit Divide on Friday of last week and the road had not been opened by Tuesday nite because of mechanical troubles and rapidly drifting snow. Arrangements were made at the Commissioners meeting on Tuesday to stockpile 500 tons of hay in the county as rapidly as possible.

Sales of license plates in 1973 showed increases in all categories over over 1972, according to figures given this week by County Treasurer Karen Glover. Mrs. Glover said the sale of automobile license plates went over the 2000 mark, reaching 2004.

Sundance High School senior Jeremy Engel just recently received the news that he has been chosen as a member of the United States Marine Corps Band. This appointment is quite an honor; there are twelve Marine Corps bands worldwide; however, there was only one guitar position open. Also, it has been three years since a Wyoming student has been accepted. Before making the Marine commitment, Jeremy plans to investigate offers by other branches of the service.
