Peek at the Past

November 1, 1923

With the increasing snow since last week, the Upton stage has reverted to the old standby and left with a team Monday. Roads are fast becoming unnavigable for motors in this section.

It is stated that the Smead hotel at Lead City will be wrecked and torn down to make way for operations of the mine. It was built only twenty years ago, but open cut operations of the mine have encroached on the hotel site. A large portion of the city of Lead is really directly over the workings of the mine, and as time goes on it would seem that the town itself must move out the way of its presiding genius.

 H. T. Williams of Manhattan reports that the elk nuisance has commenced for this season and much damage is being done to grain and hay stacks.

A crowd of approximately 165 people witnessed seven bouts of boxing held at the Legion Hall, Tuesday, November 2. Russell Bryan and David McLaughlin opened the fights with a good battle, followed by another match with Charles Shewey and Larry McLaughlin. Both were a draw by decision. The outstanding fight of the evening was a three round go between Bronwell of Belle Fourche and Yeoman of Sundance. The bout passed quickly, but held spectators' interest intently. Both fighters in this contest received bloody noses and plenty of hard punches. Yeoman won according to the judges' decisions.

Sundance The Fall Brothers are moving their sawmill to a site a short distance east of Sundance. This move was made because only small tracts of timber are available and a central sawmill is needed. Falls are cutting timber on Houston creek now but will move to the Alfred Mauch place and school section this winter. This mill will increase the population of this vicinity by approximately 25 people.
