Bulldogs runners fifth at state

The Sundance Bulldog Boys' Cross Country team ended their season with a fifth place team finish at the 2A Wyoming State Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Oct. 21 in Cheyenne. 

The Bulldogs competed against 85 competitors and 12 full teams in the 2A, 5000-meter race. 

The Bulldogs had two runners finish in the top 20. Senior Deklan Gill placed 13th in a time of 19:25.1. Junior Angel Villegas ran in a time of 19:43.1 earning a 17th-place finish. 

Juniors Parker Skeens, Kyten Johnson, and Holden Ayer placed 30th, 33rd and 40th. Skeens ran in a time of 20:22.4, while Johnson and Ayer finished in 20:27.7 and 20:51.9, respectively. Juniors Wyatt Flahaven ran in a time of 21:09.7, placing 47th, while Jager McLaughlin ran in 23:02.9, placing 65th.

Johnson, Ayer and McLaughlin each ended their season with new PRs. Johnson also earned his spot on the Top 20 Fastest 5,000-meter runners for SHS Boys' Cross Country, joining Gill, Villegas and Skeens.

Freshman Maddison Neiman competed in her first state cross country competition. Neiman ran a time of 26:25.6, finishing 29th in the contest. 

"Coach Jungwirth and I could not be more proud of the way the runners competed in Cheyenne. This season we saw growth, not only in running ability and strength, but mindset. Each runner gained confidence in his or her abilities to become true competitors," said co-coach Ann Marie Mickle.

"We saw a great end to the season."
