The Sundance Bulldogs cross country team opened their 2023 season competing in the Newcastle Invite at Mallo Camp on Friday, Aug. 25.
Six Sundance runners competed in the men’s 5000-meter varsity contest. Senior Deklan Gill ran in a time of 19:50.71. Junior Angel Villegas competed in a time of 20:32.23. Juniors Holden Ayer, Kyten Johnson and Wyatt Flahaven ran in times of 23:11.86, 23:42.06 and 23:50.58, respectively. Junior Jager McLaughlin rounded out the varsity Bulldogs, running in a time of 24:23.17.
Freshman Maddison Neiman competed in her first 5000-meter race, finishing in 27:56.72 and earning third-place in the junior varsity division.
Four Sundance junior high runners competed in the 2500-meter races.
Seventh-graders Remmington Johnson, Eva Stark and Taylor Asheim showed great improvement in their season-opener. Johnson placed third in the seventh-grade division in a time of 11:53.84. Stark placed 10th in a time of 12:43.61. Asheim finished in a time of 15:09.86.
Eighth-grader Rylan Asheim ran the junior high boys 2500-meter run in a time of 12:21.78.
All Bulldog runners showed improvement in their season-opener from the previous year. And with the first competition completed, the runners will only improve as they build as a team and compete against other strong competitors.
“The Bulldog runners did a nice job on a technical course,” said SHS cross country co-coach Ann Marie Mickle. “It’s a fun challenge for the coaches to have a wide range of runners, and Coach Jungwirth and I are very pleased with the good dynamic we have among the athletes.”
The Bulldogs compete in the Mile High Preview in Lead on August 29 and the Belle Fourche Invitational on Sept. 7.
The junior high girls’ volleyball team took to the courts in Hulett last week as the Lady Bulldogs participated in the Hulett Quad. Three Sundance teams competed against the Upton Bobcats and Moorcroft Wolves.
The 6th and 7th grade ‘B’ team beat the Upton Bobcats two games to one, while their counterpart, (6th and 7th ‘A’ team), beat the Moorcroft Wolves, two games to one.
The 8th grade team also took home the wins, with a 3-1 victory over Upton and 2-1 victory against Moorcroft. The Junior Bulldogs are hoping to add to their winning ways as they travel to face the Hulett Red Devils on Tuesday of this week.
