Library hosts Green Mountain Cemetery walk

Green Mountain Cemetery, located off Hwy 585 at the edge of Sundance, will be the location of the Library’s last cemetery walk of the season on Thursday, July 27 at 6:30 p.m.

Cemetery walks are a great way to learn more about the history of Crook County and share the stories of our early residents. During the course of the evening, we will “visit” a number of “residents” of the cemetery, relate their biographies and share stories or memories about them and their families: Alpha Jane Dorsett Edwards, David Hilton, Richard Stanton, George Reed, Edward & Jessie Smith, Stella Ondriezek Baker, Almrette Virginia Eaton Wells, Clara Ethel Lawrence Yeoman, Hazel Esther Huckins Ames & Rose Zella Proctor.

They represent a mixed bag of nationalities, backgrounds and professions – all arriving in the Black Hills in search of a better life. Civil War veteran, homesteader, miner, lumberman, naturalist, miner – they fought Indians, wolves, rough terrain and harsh weather, epidemics. Some have no descendants in Crook County, some left a legacy of ancestors who continue living here today.

The cemetery walks are open to all and free – an enjoyable way to spend a summer evening, simply meet at the cemetery at 6:30 p.m. For more information, please contact Jill Mackey at (307) 290-3111 or [email protected].
