The Sundance Lady Bulldogs closed out their regular season with a four-game winning streak, taking a 48-41 victory over the Tongue River Eagles.
Opening play on Friday night, the Lady Eagles hit two three pointers right out of the gate and took the initial lead. The Lady Bulldogs struggled to put points on the board throughout the first quarter of play, but luckily their defense was able to hold the Eagles to seven points, keeping the score close.
The momentum picked up for the Lady Bulldogs as the second quarter got underway. Jaylin Mills, Savannah Williams and Zoe Skeens found the hot hands as they began to sink their shots and keep the Sundance team close. Going into the break down by three, 21-24, the Lady Bulldogs had momentum and time on their side.
With the second half of play underway the scoring trio of Mills, Williams and Skeens continued to dominate the court. Taking the lead away from the Eagles at the start of the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs gave themselves a six-point cushion before pulling out in a stall with just under three minutes left in the game.
Needing a foul to get the ball back, Tongue River sent the Bulldogs to the line hoping for a rebound. The Bulldogs were able to maintain their composure under pressure and added another conference win, 48-41, to their record.
Jaylin Mills led the scoring charge for the Bulldogs, putting up 19 points on the night, followed closely by teammate Zoe Skeens, who added 14, and Savanna Williams, who chipped in 10 points.
The Sundance team ended their regular season with a 12-8 overall record and a 6-0 conference record.
The Lady Bulldogs will enter the 2A East Regional tournament as the number one seed from the north. They will face the number four seed from the south, Niobrara County, on Thursday at 4 p.m. at the Sundance High School.
In their final game of the regular season the Sundance boys' basketball team fell to the Tongue River Eagles, 65-41. It was another tough conference matchup for the Bulldogs as the Eagles came out firing on all cylinders.
The smothering defense and efficient offense gave Tongue River a commanding 20-4 lead after one quarter of play. As the second quarter set in, the Bulldog offense settled down and began to put points on the board behind the scoring of Jake Schommer and Keaton Mills.
By halftime, the Bulldogs had gained some momentum on offense but still found themselves trailing 18-35.
The second half of the game played out much like the first as the Bulldogs struggled on the offensive end. The Eagles, on the other hand, continued to push their way to the basket and add points to the board.
In the end, it was Tongue River who got the best of the Bulldogs in a 65-41 win.
The Sundance boys end their regular season play with a 6-14 record overall and 0-6 in the conference. The Bulldogs will enter the 2A East Regional Tournament the number four seed from the north and will play the number one seed from the south, Pine Bluffs, Thursday, February 23, at 8:30 p.m. in Sundance.
