Continuing the Crook County News Since 1884
The Bureau of Land Management has followed the lead of the county in lifting its fire restrictions on public lands in Crook County, as well as in Campbell, Converse, Platte and Sheridan counties. Meanwhile, the U.S. Forest Service has lifted its stage one restrictions on the Bearlodge and Hell Canyon Ranger Districts.
It is now once again permissible to build a campfire on BLM-administered lands. Smoking is also allowed, as is the operation of a chainsaw and the use of an arc of gas welder or an acetylene or other type of torch.
However, the BLM has issued a reminder that certain activities are not permitted at any time of the year, whether or not restrictions are in place.
Fireworks may not be discharged on BLM land at any time, and firearms using incendiary or tracer ammunition are also not allowed. Members of the public may not burn or ignite tires, wires, magnesium or other hazardous or explosive materials, operate an off-road vehicle that doesn’t have a properly installed spark arrestor or discharge explosives of any kind, pyrotechnic devices or exploding targets.
The Forest Service meanwhile reminds citizens that stage one fire restrictions remain in place on the South Dakota side of the Black Hills all year round.
“Fire prevention is everyone’s responsibility,” states a press release reminding recreationists to continue being careful with fire in the forest.
“It is critical to use enough water to completely douse campfires until they are out cold to the touch. Keep campfires small and contained within the ring and never leave them unattended.”
