Library hosts summer cemetery walks

Crook County Library will be hosting two cemetery walks again this summer, kicking off with the Mt. Moriah Cemetery Walk in Sundance on Thurs., Aug. 11 at 6:30 p.m.

Cemetery walks are a great way to learn more about the history of Crook County and share the stories of our early residents. During the course of the evening we will “visit” a number of “residents” of the cemetery, relate their biographies and share stories or memories about them.

This year we will “meet” a number of early Crook County residents who were represented in the book “Progressive Men of Wyoming.” This book was published in 1903 and contained the biographies of many Wyoming residents of the day, 34 of them from Crook County.

They represent a mixed bag of nationalities, backgrounds and professions. Some have no descendants in Crook County, some left a legacy of ancestors who continue living here today.

Join us and spend the evening with A.O. Banks, Horace Cole, Leroy Dickinson, William Draper, Willard Good, the Hawken brothers, Ambrose Hemler, Albert Hoge, Charles Ives, Joe Lytle, Charles Meeks, Melvin Nichols, James Richardson, Augustus Ripley and Alexander Wagstaff.

The cemetery walks are open to all and free – an enjoyable way to spend a summer evening. Simply meet at the cemetery at 6:30 p.m. Cemetery walks this summer include Mt. Moriah on Aug. 11 and New Haven Cemetery on Aug. 25.
