Gillette woman gets suspended sentence for possession

A Gillette woman has been given a suspended sentence on felony possession charges after marijuana was found during an investigation into a vehicle fire in Beulah.

According to court reports, a Crook County Sheriff’s Office deputy spoke with Jennifer Archer while investigating a vehicle fire at Stateline Station on May 1, 2021. She was identified by the expired paper copy of her temporary Wyoming identification card.

While speaking with Archer, the deputy allegedly detected the smell of raw marijuana and asked her if she was carrying any. According to court reports, Archer admitted to having smoked marijuana earlier.

The deputy, however, explained that the odor he could smell was of raw marijuana, not burned. Archer allegedly admitted that she had marijuana on her person and produced a sandwich baggie from her pocket.

The deputy reports reviewing Archer’s criminal history, which indicated she had prior convictions for possession of a controlled substance. She was placed under arrest.

The suspected marijuana tested positive and was weighed at 14.5 grams.

Archer was charged with one felony count of possession of marijuana, third or subsequent offense. She has four known prior convictions in California between 2007 and 2013.

Judge Stuart S. Healy III gave Archer a sentence of two to four years in a state penal institution and a $2500 fine, suspended pending successful completion of three years of supervised probation.
