If you live in the State of Wyoming, you are required to obtain a Wyoming vehicle registration – no matter where you work or if you’re only here on a temporary basis.
The Crook County Sheriff’s Office is reminding citizens of this fact after receiving a number of enquiries from people who are unsure how Wyoming State Statute 31-2-201 applies to them.
This statute deals with title and registration for motor vehicles, including both permanent and temporary registrations for both personal and commercial vehicles. It applies to anyone who owns, leases or rents a place of residence or otherwise lives within Wyoming for the purpose of employment.
It also applies to anyone who is gainfully employed in Wyoming, says the Sheriff’s Office, no matter the trade, profession or occupation. The statute reads that a registration should be purchased immediately when the vehicle is being operated by a person not from this state for transportation to or from that employment.
“If you are living or residing in border communities such as Beulah and Aladdin and traveling to South Dakota for work, you need to have Wyoming registration on your vehicles,” reads a statement from the Sheriff’s Office.
The length of your stay does, however, affect the type of registration you should apply for.
“If you are temporarily living and working in the state, you can obtain a temporary registration from the Crook County Treasurer’s Office in the county courthouse,” reads the statement.
If you remain within the jurisdiction for a period of 120 days or longer, on the other hand, you are required to obtain Wyoming registration. This applies regardless of where you live, whether you are employed, non-employed or retired, or any other circumstances.
“Any person, immediately upon the date of registering to vote in Wyoming, an application for public assistance in Wyoming or purchasing and holding a resident Wyoming hunting or fishing license, shall have Wyoming registration on their vehicles,” reads the statement.
“These statutes apply to every owner, operator or lessee of each vehicle driven. This applies even if your vehicle is registered in another state to grandma or mom and dad and you are not a college student.”
