100 Years Ago

Dec. 1, 1921

Dr. Clarenbach reports an increase in population of Crook County, a boy arriving Friday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Mowry on Beaver Creek, and a girl came to grace the home of Mr. and Mrs. Chester Ogden.

The ranch home of Herman Summers on Arch creek was totally destroyed by fire one day last week. Mr. and Mrs. Summers are residing at the ranch east of Sundance this winter and George Summers was alone at the Arch creek place, being engaged in field brushing. When his attention was called by the smoke, the fire had gained good headway and he was unable to save anything of value.

James E. Bloxom, a rancher living near Gillette, swallowed a toothpick this week which lodged in one of his lungs. He was at once taken to Chicago where the obstruction was removed. Mr. Bloxom returned home and is feeling none the worse for his unusual experience.

75 Years Ago

Dec. 5, 1946

It is entirely up to the electrical users of Sundance, said Mayor Jay Durfee Tuesday of this week, whether the present power unit at the Sundance light plant will hold out until a new power unit can be brought and installed here. The mayor said that from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. was the time that the present power unit was carrying the heaviest load of the day. During those hours users are urgently requested not to use irons or other heating units in their homes.

Workmen have been busy the last few days at the location of the new Gamble store in Sundance, building display shelves, etc. for the new store which will hold its formal opening Jan. 16. Chester Guidinger and Edgar Partlow, owners say that they have been assured that they will have many hard-to-get items on their shelves for their opening.

50 Years Ago

Dec. 2, 1971

Mrs. Alice Hawken, Sundance, a member of the Governor’s Advisory Committee on Aging, is attending a conference in Washington, D.C. this week. Mrs. Hawken, a member of the Crook County Welfare Department staff, is representing Crook, Weston and Niobrara counties at the White House Conference on Aging.

A Sundance man, Sidney Dinkins, was uninjured Monday in a one-car accident on State highway 24 about 4 ½ miles east of Aladdin. State Highway Patrolman Bill Wright said the road was wet when the accident occurred at 2:45 p.m. He said Dinkins was alone in the car and eastbound when he lost control of the vehicle.

Nov. 28, 1996

Several SHS students have been selected for the NE District High School Honor Band and Choir Clinic which was held in Gillette. SHS students selected for Honor Choir are: Josh Farver, Jennifer Geis, Zach Miller, Whitney Rogers, Bryan Sharp and Brittany Wales. SHS students selected for the wind ensemble were Many Marr, alto sax and Ben Tonak, trumpet. Jayme Dark was also selected for this group but was unable to attend. Students selected for the Clinic Band were Jeanne Schlenker, flute I; Jana Green, flute II; Callie Hilty, clarinet I and Jesse Oster, alto sax II.
