Volunteers needed to keep Winterfest going

A brand new festival burst onto the local scene in 2015, immediately attracting plenty of visitors whose idea of a fine winter day was to play around in the snow while watching their neighbors ski-jor down Main Street or tumble down a slope atop a bar stool.

The hard-working organizers who first hosted the Sundance Winter Festival decided last year that it was time to pass the torch to someone else, and the Sundance Chamber of Commerce is now looking for assistance to keep the popular event running.

This year’s Winterfest was hampered by ongoing issues to find volunteers willing to run it, until Steele Roping stepped up to organize a slightly different format that would have been based at the fairgrounds. It was ultimately cancelled, though natural causes were to blame: there simply wasn’t enough snow to build a course.

The chamber and the City of Sundance stressed their desire to see the festival come back in the future, and the time has now arrived to start the planning process.

“We’re seeking to find an organization, many individuals, etc. that would be interested in putting on the Winter Festival as a committee under the chamber,” says Jamie Jessen, Sundance Chamber of Commerce.

Without assistance, the future of the Sundance Winter Festival could be in peril.

“The current board cannot solely run the event but would want to continue to support the event as an organization,” Jessen explains.

“We don’t want to see the event go away but without proper support and leadership, we cannot continue to put it on.”

The next festival has been scheduled for February 19, 2022. If you are able and willing to take on the challenge of organizing it, please contact a member of the chamber or email [email protected].
