100 Years Ago

August 11, 1921

J.W. Caskaden, for thirty years a resident of Crook County, left Friday for his old home in West Virginia. For the last nine years he has made his home on a sheep wagon, being employed by John McKean.

Grant Bay of Hulett was a caller at this office Thursday and left a sample of Yellow Transparent that were grown on his ranch ten miles north of Hulett. There were thirteen perfect apples growing on one stem. Mr. Bay will have a fruit display at the county fair next month.

J.T. McGuckin, post commander of the Sundance Legion, is in receipt of a letter from P.L. Horney of Hulett, in which Mr. Horney offers to meet anyone from this county in a wrestling match at 135 to 140 pounds on a 60-40 basis.

Aug. 1, 1946

With a class of three students, Ray Lane of the Lane Flying Service of Belle Fourche opened his first class in Sundance Monday of this week, using a Taylorcraft training ship. Present students enrolled for the course are Lee Schloredt, Glen Grubb and Ted Cochran, all of Sundance.

Sidney Harvey has had workmen busy at the location for his new home this week. They have been busy pouring cement and making other preparations for the house which will have five rooms and bath, in addition to several rooms in the basement.

Aug. 5, 1971

Two Hulett boys narrowly escaped suffocation Monday afternoon when a cave they were digging fell in on them. Kenneth Sipe and Eddie Martinelli, both 14, were dug out of the cave-in by several Hulett residents who arrived on the scene shortly after the accident.

Alan Edwards reported that the first tank load of oil has been spread on city streets. He said it covered a larger area than had been anticipated – about 15 blocks of roadway on the south side of Sundance. Mayor Buster Popham said the oiling is an experimental project and that he expects three or four loads will be spread this summer. This summer’s work will probably resulting the oiling of about 45 blocks in an area between the intersection of Highways 14 and 585 and Sundance Creek. City crews are laying chips onto the oil.

A group of concerned citizens of Crook County met at the Ponderosa Café in Hulett on July 30 to discuss several issues that are concerns for Crook County residents. First on the list is the name change of Devils Tower to “Grey Horned Butte”.
