Continuing the Crook County News Since 1884
Someone in Crook County is owed more than $18,000. Someone else recently found out they were entitled to almost $8000.
Though the State Treasurer’s Office Unclaimed Property Division paid out a record $7.4 million in unclaimed property over the last year, there are tens of millions of dollars still waiting to go back to the citizens they belong to.
“Each year we continue to get more money turned in to the State by businesses that cannot locate the owners of unclaimed property,” State Treasurer Curt Meier said in a statement about the new record.
“We work hard to reunite as much of this money as possible, and the numbers recorded this year show that our efforts paid off.”
This year’s payouts topped the previous record set in the 2018-19 fiscal year of $6.86 million.
But while $7.423 million was sent out, more was actually added to the total. Fiscal year 2021 say $10.1 million added to the Unclaimed Property fund, which saw another record broken: it was the first time the $10 million barrier had been broken in a single year.
The law in Wyoming requires that unclaimed property be held in perpetuity until the rightful owner can claim it. At this time, more than $93 million is waiting to be claimed, and Meier is encouraging the public to take a moment to check whether part of that total belongs to you.
“With so much more money added each year, we encourage citizens to visit our website at least once every year or two to see if anything is owed to them,” Meier said in the statement.
“Even if you have received a check in the past, there’s still a good chance there are more funds waiting for you.”
Property is turned over to the state when a business, agency or governmental entity owes money, securities or other property to an individual but cannot locate them for a specified time period.
The largest remaining total property to be claimed by a current or previous Crook County resident is $18.394.52. A member of the local community may also be the correct owner of a $475,682.53 property, which is currently listed as from an unknown location.
