First musical in 25 years comes to SHS

Sundance High School was all set to present its first full-scale musical in 25 years just as the pandemic hit last year. Though it’s a little later than originally planned, “Flapper” will finally be coming to a theater very near you this March and the students invite the whole community to come enjoy the caper.

A comedy tribute to the 1920s, Flapper tells the tale of Polly Pepper (Rhianna Heaster), a young flapper who is about to turn 18 and inherit a diamond necklace called the ‘Ice Garden’. Trouble is brewing as mobsters are planning to snatch the necklace at Polly’s birthday party.

With the help of a colorful cast of characters including Polly’s beau Buck Wayne (Josh Pridgeon), crime fighter Lieutenant Fluke (Deklan Gill), Mona of the Crazy Cat Club (Telsie Comer), Monica Woodsquirrel of Radio Station WWWW atop Hotel Times Square (Rylie Banker), the Ziegfeld girls (Ella Bifulco, Brooke Corean, Bonnie Wacker and Briska Johnson), the Everly sisters (Ashlynn Fowler, Lexie Marchant and Jordan Mouat), gangsters Muggs O’Toole (Tanner Sanford) and Cheater Hayes (Jacob Comer) and ‘Flagpole Sitter’ Lenny Knickerbocker (Bren Anderson), will she save the day?

“I choose this musical because we are in our own ‘roaring 20’s’,” says director Teresa Preisner. “I have such great kids in choir and this is a humorous, ‘madcapped’ show that can really show them off.” 

Songs include ‘It Has to Be Jazz’, ‘Dijja Ever?’ and ‘The Roaring Twenties’.

The three performances are planned for March 19-21 in the SHS auditorium. Two evening performances will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, with a matinee at 3 p.m. on Sunday.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, seating will be limited and attendees are encouraged to purchase tickets at the high school in advance. Audience members will be asked to wear masks throughout the performance.
