Charles Mitts, age 73, passed away peacefully on February 27, 2021 in Sundance, Wyoming. Charles was born on June 17, 1947 in Sundance to Frank and Bessie Mitts, the ninth of ten children.
He graduated from Sundance High School in 1965 and served in the 7th Cavalry in Vietnam from 1966 to 1968. Charles was a member of the VFW.
After serving in the Army he settled in Horse Creek, Wyoming, working in the underground limestone mine. Charles married Shirley Tugman Clarke on June 26, 1971 and became a step-dad to Candy and Dana Clarke. In July 1973 their daughter Marla was born.
The family moved to Douglas, Wyoming, where Charles worked in underground mining and then moved to Wright, Wyoming, working in open pit mining. He retired from Powder River Coal Company in June 2002. After retirement he moved back to his hometown of Sundance, Wyoming where he worked for the United States Postal Service and Crook County School District #1 as a school bus driver.
He is survived by his daughter, Marla Mitts; step-daughter, Candy Johnson; step-son, Dana Clarke; grandchildren, Steven Johnson, Stacy Cowley and Dusty Clarke; ten great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Charles is also survived by one brother, Everett (Linda) Mitts and three sisters, Louise Griffin, Helen Gail Snell and Atha (Stan) Hall; many nieces and nephews and special friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Mitts; his parents, Frank and Bessie Mitts; sisters, Rosa Mae Carnahan, Pauline Smith, Jessie VanZee and brothers, Dale and Kenneth Mitts.
Visitation will be held on March 5, 2021, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Fidler-Roberts & Isburg Funeral Chapel, Sundance. Services will be held on March 6, 2021, at 11 a.m. at Central Office, Sundance. Burial will follow at Green Mountain Cemetery (Weston County, Wyoming).
