Continuing the Crook County News Since 1884
Discover one of history’s less well known events with a free class hosted by the Eastern Wyoming College Outreach Community Education Program. On October 27, Tim Velder will introduce the “Horsemeat March” to Deadwood and the 1876 Slim Buttes Battle.
Following the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876, Native American and U.S. Cavalry forces scattered across the northern Great Plains to resolve the ongoing conflict. Forces led by U.S. General George Crook and Sioux warrior Crazy Horse classed at the Slim Buttes in northwestern South Dakota.
Following the battle, the Cavalry suffered through horrible weather conditions, literally walking the entire way to the Black Hills over a period of days. Running out of provisions and harassed by the Sioux, the men were forced to eat their own horses.
“The class is free, but we are collecting a free will offering to benefit our local food pantry,” says Todd Hickman, Community Ed Coordinator.
The class will be held on October 27 at 6:30 p.m. in the SHS woodshop classroom.
