2020 Census reaching deadline

With just a couple of weeks to go until the 2020 Census wraps up, Crook County has had one of the lowest self-response rates in the state – and the nation. Efforts are still underway to complete the population picture before the deadline at the end of the month.

The U.S. Census Bureau has recorded just 50% of Crook County’s households self-responding to the census, which indicates the number of people who completed the questionnaire online, by mail or by phone. This is significantly lower than the overall Wyoming rate of 60.2%.

Response rates range considerably across the state, with only four counties reporting lower rates than Crook County: Niobrara at 44.8%, Carbon at 43.9%, Sublette at 38.4% and Teton at 36.9%.

At the other end of the scale, 70.9% of Laramie County residents have self-responded to the census, with Natrona, Johnson, Sheridan and Park counties all reporting rates between 63 and 68%.

When citizens do not respond, census takers follow up to obtain the information needed. Just over three quarters of the workload required to fill out Wyoming’s data has now been completed.

Census takers are still gathering information across the state for the 10.7% of people who have not yet responded or been contacted.
