Old Stoney crosses final hurdles

Slowly but surely, Old Stoney is creeping towards the finish line. The final hurdle is close to being crossed with the arrival of the flow control valve needed to get a certificate of occupancy.

Public Works Director Mac Erickson reported last week at the Sundance City Council meeting on the fire suppression system in the old building. In May, the state fire marshal declined to grant an occupancy award on the basis that this system did not meet requirements.

As the city was going to need to extend a water line down the street in front of Old Stoney anyway, to serve the new Sundance Square park, this was placed in the design process.

The new line is now in, said Erickson, and the flow control valve is in hand and ready to be installed prior to the fire marshal’s next walkthrough. According to Clerk Treasurer Kathy Lenz, this is set to take place next week.

Once the certificate of occupancy is secured, the elevator can be tested and the inside work can be finished up, said Lenz. At that point, the museum can begin the process of moving into the building.

Lenz also reported on the Sundance Square project next to Old Stoney, which will be constructed by Ainsworth Benning and has an expected completion date of November.

According to Lenz, Norris Designs has submitted an additional service agreement for the design of the park as this portion of the project ran over by $4800. However, she and Erickson both felt that the budget on this project is tight and there is some question as to whether the charge is fair.

Lenz informed the council that the extra cost is associated with the city insisting that bids be run through the design company, rather than the city, and with an issue with the design of the restrooms.

“We were in a little push and shove about that,” she said.

Lenz suggested that the council delay discussion of this change order until closer to the end of the project, when it will be possible to tell if there is money left over in the budget. The council passed a motion to postpone.
