Celebrate the “roaring 20s” with a humorous, madcapped show
Sundance High School will play host to its first full-scale musical in a quarter decade next weekend, says Teresa Preisner, music teacher. “Flapper” is a comedy tribute to the 1920s.
“I choose this musical because we are in the our own ‘roaring 20’s’,” says Preisner. “I have such great kids in choir and this is a humorous, ‘madcapped’ show that can really show them off. Years ago, I did this exact show with a high school in Minnesota and really enjoyed the final product. “
The cast will include kids from choir and several outside that group, including from junior high. Teacher Mary Jane Jordan and Preisner’s husband, John, have assisted in making the performance happen.
“Since I am new to the district I figured that it was a great time to try new things with my students,” Preisner says. “We have been rehearsing since January during the choir class period and whenever I can grab kids!”
Flapper tells the tale of Polly Pepper, a young flapper who is about to turn 18 and inherit a diamond necklace called the ‘Ice Garden’. Trouble is brewing as mobsters are planning to snatch the necklace at Polly’s birthday party. With the help of a colorful cast of characters including crime fighter Lieutenant Fluke and ‘Flagpole Sitter’ Lenny Knickerbocker, will she save the day?
Songs include ‘It Has to Be Jazz’, ‘Dijja Ever?’ and ‘The Roaring Twenties’.
The two performances are scheduled for March 19 and 20 at 7 p.m. and tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students. Preisner explains that, while she does not normally charge for performances, in this instance there is a royalty fee for the musical.
