Tough week for girls

The Sundance girls hosted a good Moorcroft team on Thursday night. The Wolves came into the match with a 2-0 record in the conference and a hot streak on the floor.

The Wolves put the pressure on the Bulldogs from the beginning, opening up with a full court press that caused unforced turnovers and fouls on the Bulldogs behalf. Unfortunately for Sundance, Moorcroft came in with a hot shooting hand as well.

Ending the first quarter with a buzzer beater three-point shot, the Wolves continued into the second quarter with a 12-0 run in less than two minutes. Led by Kaylei Petz, who sank seven of their nine three-pointers in the first half, the Wolves could not miss from behind the arc and took a 35-16 lead into the half.

The Bulldogs found their stride in the second half of play behind the scoring of Nevada Gill who was able to nail five baskets from behind the arc throughout the course of the game. However, being outscored in the second quarter 29-4 would cause problems for the Bulldogs down the stretch.

The Bulldogs began to pressure Petz and the three-point line but the Wolves became more diligent with their offense, working the ball inside and maintaining their lead. While Gill earned a three-point buzzer beater of her own to end the game, it was too little too late and the Wolves walked off the court with another conference win in the 58-41 victory.

Back on their home court Saturday, the Lady Bulldogs hosted the Lusk Tigers for a nonconference game. Seeing another full court press to start the game, the Bulldogs struggled to get their offense moving. The Tigers, on the other hand used the press to their advantage.

Feeding off of the energy caused by the press, the Tigers were able to go into the half with the 25-12 lead. The second half saw both teams struggle to get points on the board, while it was not for lack of effort.

Both teams were getting great looks at the basket, however nothing would fall for either team. It wasn’t until late in the fourth quarter when the Sundance girls were able to make a run and chip away at the Tiger lead, however the clock ran out before they could overtake the Tigers. The Lusk Tigers took the 38-30 victory.

With this loss, the Lady Bulldogs move to a 6-9 record overall, 2-1 in the conference. The Lady Bulldogs have a light week this week as they will play Newell on Monday and rest up for their game on Friday, when they host Tongue River.
