February 4, 1920

Influenza has appeared in Sundance, C.H. Massie being afflicted and his home quarantined. The disease is reported to be of light form and it is sincerely hoped neither Mr. Massie’s family, nor others, will have a long siege. There are also a number of quarantines reported in Red Canyon east of the city.

At the risk of being punned and jested C.J. Finch yesterday stated frankly, emphatically and without reservation that on ground hog day he encountered attacked and laid low at his ranch a real snake which was strictly alive and bent on combat. Charley takes this as a serpentine intrusion on the ground hog and a sure sign of spring.

The shimmy dance has been banned in Sheridan thru an ordinance adopted Monday afternoon by the city council at the request of the dancing masters. Any person violating the new ordinance will be fined $100. In placing the ban on “vulgar and indecent” dancing, the ordinance defines dancing positions which are prohibited, such as “dancing with cheeks too close or touching, with arm or arms about the neck of partner, or with shaking or jerking of upper body while taking short steps or standing.”

February 1, 1945

At a meeting of parents and boys held Monday night at the church the desire was expressed to form a cub pack in the community for the boys too young to join the Scouts.

That Pvt. Leo Lloyd Grass was killed in action recently, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John E. Grass who live in the Mona vicinity, were notified last Tuesday. Leo was only 20 and had been in service less than ten months.

February 5, 1970

The 12,000 acre J-H Ranch in the Hulett country was purchased Jan. 20 by Albert Neiman, Hulett rancher. Neiman bought the ranch from Don Steiger, who has moved to Arkansas. The Steiger family had owned the ranch for about 30 years.

Caludette Kanode, a Sundance high school senior and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jess Kanode, has been named Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow at Sundance high school. She was named the winner on the basis of her score in the knowledge and attitude test taken by senior girls in December.

February 2, 1995

Crook County Sheriff Zachary G. Szakacs has named Steve Stahla as Undersheriff. Stahla comes from Kimball, Nebraska where he was on the Kimball Police Department for five years. New deputies on the force are K.C. Davis and Steve Jordan. Three deputies have been retained on the force. Bill Sipe and Steve Couch, Sundance and Todd Bouley, Moorcroft, will continue to serve as deputies.
