Uprooting offices

The next phase of the renovation project has begun in the county courthouse, with the County Clerk’s staff playing a temporary game of musical chairs while work takes place in their office. If you’re looking to register as a voter or file a title, for the time being you’ll need to head to the commissioners’ room instead.

The staff moved into their new digs last week as Maintenance Foreman Larry Schommer began the process of remodeling the clerk’s office, removing all the furnishings and tearing out the old carpet. The crew has already knocked through the concrete of the back wall to create a second door and demolished the tiny office in which the county clerk previously resided.

Ultimately, the project will create a 100-square foot office space specifically for the clerk. The county clerk will no longer be the only elected official who doesn’t have their own office.

The commissioners’ room reached a point of the renovation process where it was once again usable in time for the January meetings. The room is slightly larger and encompasses the corridor that ran behind the room, which gives space for more audience seating and document storage for the commissioners.

Because enlarging the commissioners’ room took away some of the storage space used by the clerk, this will now also be housed in the back vault area.
