The fourth grade kids were treated to a pizza lunch on Tuesday using ingredients they planted themselves in the hoop house at the fairgrounds. Under the direction of 4-H Educator Sara Fleenor and Beth Ellsbury, they harvested tomatoes, onions, basil and peppers.
Once the hive of excited activity died down and the bowls were filled with vegetables (and everyone was sure the basil was really basil), Fleenor showed the kids how to harvest wheat. All ingredients gathered, each one was carefully washed and chopped to be assembled on pizza bases and eaten as a delicious lunchtime meal.
The grow-your-own pizza program is part of an ongoing 4-H project to help kids understand where their food comes from. Other grades will this week harvest corn and make butter, pick pumpkins and design bug hotels as part of a continuous cycle that sees students take on a different food-related practical project twice per year from kindergarten through fifth grade.
