Sundance volleyball won their season opener on Tuesday night against Upton. The first game was a back and forth of points between the Bulldogs and Bobcats.
With the score tied at 10, the Bulldogs started to pull away one point at a time. Sundance was up 21-16 when the Bobcats called a timeout to slow the scoring and try to regroup.
The timeout worked as the Bobcats closed the gap to one, with a score of 24-23. In the end, the Bulldogs were able to get the final point and take the win in game one.
Game two and three saw the Bulldogs continue to build momentum, stringing together a few points at a time while the Bobcats continued to lose the ball out of bounds. The Bulldogs walked away with a straight set wins: 25-23, 25-15, 25-13.
Aftyn Marchant and Cana McInerney led the Bulldogs in serving each going 15 for 16 on the night. Laney Dungey contributed from the back row, coming up with 15 digs on the night.
The Bulldogs also travelled to Gillette on Friday for some pool play and bracket competition. In the pool play, Sundance faced off against Thunder Basin High School, Douglas High School and Cheyenne South High School. While the Bulldogs did not sweep the pool play, they were able to hold their own against the larger schools and keep the scores close.
After pool play, the Bulldogs competed in the bronze bracket facing off against Burns High School first. These two matches went down to the wire with the Bulldogs coming out on top, 25-22 and 25-21.
In round two, Sundance was pitted against the Big Horn Rams and once again, the Bulldogs were able to pull together as a team and walk away with two more victories 26-24 and 25-15. Round three of the bronze bracket brought the Wright Panthers to face off against the Bulldogs. In two more close games, the Bulldogs came out on top, 25-22 and 25-21, making them the champions of the bronze bracket.
The Bulldogs will be back in action this weekend as they travel to Big Horn to compete in the Big Horn Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
