Mount Roosevelt Friendship Tower featured at Forest Moonwalk

Join the Black Hills National Forest in honoring two turn of the century conservation leaders, Theodore Roosevelt and Seth Bullock, at a Forest Moonwalk July 13 at 7 p.m. at Mount Roosevelt Friendship Tower near Deadwood.

The famous Deadwood Sheriff and early Forest Supervisor, Seth Bullock, built the Mount Roosevelt Friendship Tower in 1919 as a dedication to President Theodore Roosevelt, his close friend of many years. A 100th rededication was recently held at the Tower on July 6, 2019.

Gib Young, featured speaker and Theodore Roosevelt historical interpreter, will give visitors a glimpse of the past life of the 26th President of the United States and his lifelong friendship with Bullock.

Participants will hike approximately one mile round trip up a moderately sloped trail from a gravel parking area to the Mount Roosevelt Friendship Tower. Carpooling is recommended as parking is limited at the trailhead. Visitors are encouraged to arrive early and bring a lawn chair.

To reach the Moonwalk parking site from Deadwood, travel approximately 1 mile north on Highway 85 to the turn off for The Lodge at Deadwood resort. Turn left as if going to the resort but keep right and follow Forest Road 133 approximately .2 miles to Mount Roosevelt Picnic Area. Signs are posted at major intersection to help guide visitors. 

Visitors are encouraged to bring a lawn chair, flashlight, water, and bug repellant and dress for unexpected weather and hiking on uneven land. Long pants and sturdy footwear (hiking boots or athletic shoes) are recommended for your comfort and safety.
