Now in its tenth year, the Old West Invitational Turkey Shoot in Hulett has become a hugely popular event for hunting enthusiasts far and wide. This year’s event will take place on May 2 to 4 and will offer plenty of opportunities for the local community to visit with outdoorsmen and women, watch the action and perhaps bump into one or two of the celebrity guests.
Proceeds from this year’s shoot will be split between the Wyoming Wildlife Foundation and the Greater Hulett Community Center. The main event is a one-shot turkey hunting competition that is expected to attract 100 competitors.
Meanwhile, the Annie Oakley shooting competition will take place at the fairgrounds and visitors will be invited to relax with a round of golf at the Golf Club at Devils Tower.
The event begins on May 2 with a “Get Acquainted Reception” on Main Street from 5 to 8 p.m., including a review of the event rules from Wyoming Game & Fish Director Brian Nesvik and the Calcutta.
On May 3, hunters will begin early while the Annie Oakley contest takes place at the Hulett Rodeo Grounds from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Lunch will be held on Main Street from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
A social hour will take place from 5 to 7 p.m., again on Main Street, followed by the dinner and annual fundraiser.
The next day, visitors can enjoy brunch from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Main Street and the contests will continue throughout the day. A social hour will again take place, this time from 5 to 6:30 p.m.
The event will conclude with dinner and an awards presentation at the Greater Hulett Community Center, beginning at 7 p.m.
Special guests this year are expected to include Governor Mark Gordon; former Governors Dave Freudenthal and Michael J. Sullivan; retired U.S. Air Force Brigadier General Patrick A. Burns; combat wounded Wyoming soldier James Schmidt; “Winchester Whitetail Revolution” and Outdoor Channel television personality Allen Treadwell; Adam and Brenda Weatherby of Weatherby Inc.; and turkey calling international champion Preston Pittman.
