Road repair in question

Whether or not the City of Sundance is responsible for repairing the top portion of the Canyon Road is a question likely to be brewing in nearby residents' minds. The melting snow has revealed significant damage to the asphalt but, while the city did the paving, the part of the road showing damage lies outside city limits.

The question was raised at last Tuesday's council meeting, when Public Works Director Mac Erickson reported that the asphalt is crumbling and falling apart "past the point of repair". Council Member and WYDOT engineering supervisor Brad Marchant agreed, stating that, "the asphalt is shot".

The issue, said Mayor Paul Brooks, is that there is likely to be a difference in opinion over the road. He predicted that some will feel the city should be responsible for repairing the asphalt because the city laid that asphalt in the first place.

On the other hand, he said, will be the opinion that city money should not be expended outside city limits. Statutorily, he added, this would be correct.

Police Chief Marty Noonan stated that he has already opened discussions with the board for the Sundance West subdivision. Brooks approved, saying that the conversation does need to begin.
