Lewis Russell Wood

Lewis Russell Wood, 85, of Hulett, Wyoming, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 12, 2019, at The Legacy Living and Rehab Center in Gillette, Wyoming.

Lewis was born four miles west of Hulett on August 25, 1933. His parents were John C. and Myrtle (Lawrence) Wood.

Lewis grew up in the Hulett-Sundance area and attended grade school in Hulett and The Government Canyon School in Moskee. The family moved to Spearfish, South Dakota, in 1948 so the kids could attend Spearfish High School and Lewis graduated in 1952.

Lewis served in the US Army from 1953-1955, serving 16 months in Korea. He was awarded the "Ambassador for Peace" at a Medal Ceremony in 2015. After returning from Korea, Lewis married his sweetheart, Shirley Knapp, July 17, 1955.

Lewis was in the logging business for several years and was manager of the Hulett Coop before purchasing his own business. Lewis and Shirley owned and operated three different businesses from 1977 to 2007; Devils Tower Trading Post, Big Horn Mountain Campground and Devils Tower View.

Lewis dearly loved his family and enjoyed fishing, hunting, boating, dancing, playing cards and all family events. Lewis loved spending the winters in Arizona.

Lewis is survived by his wife, Shirley, Gillette; seven children, Anita (Mark) Gabso, North Smithfield, Rhode Island, Shawn (Bob) Burnett, Spearfish, Russell Wood, Casper, Wyoming, Taina (John) Garman, Buffalo, Wyoming, Elaena (Dean) Velikaneye, Gillette, Treig (Heather) Wood, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, Trev (Monica) Wood, Cody, Wyoming; 23 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Lewis is preceded in death by his son, Kevin and parents, John and Myrtle Wood.

Funeral services were Sunday, February 17, 2019, at the Greater Hulett Community Center in Hulett with Pastor Tom Martin, officiating. Burial followed at Moore Hill Cemetery near Hulett.
