January 29, 1919

Mr. Groundhog, the problem is that all want the warm sunshine to continue but don’t want you to see your shadow next Sunday. Just how that can be arranged hasn’t been worked out.

Robert Cook of Mona, father of Leslie Cook of the local telephone company, died at Mona January 23 after a lingering illness. He had been a resident and respected citizen of the county from the early settlement.

A lot of grain from the Belshe ranch is being trucked out from Sundance to market, and it is said with the exceptions of one snowbank, a regular winter obstruction at the A.L. Dickenson ranch for the past thirty-odd years, a motor truck might be used all the way to the Belshe ranch, which would be some stunt for that mode of heavy hauling on Houston creek in January.

February 3, 1944

Preliminary arrangements were completed Monday whereby Fred Good is purchasing the old bakery properties from Emery Williams. Mr. Good plans to use this to house the frozen food locker plant. Applications for the necessary priorities for its establishment are now in Washington awaiting final approval.

Ethel Straight, young Alva girl, who suffered badly frozen feet when she undertook a trek across the Bear Lodge some months ago, is now able to walk again. Carl Shrum, who was in from the sawmill where her parents live, said Monday that she was able to walk several hundred feet at a time, although her feet are quite tender.

January 30, 1969

Susan Nussbaum has been named the 1969 Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow for Sundance high school on the basis of her score in a written knowledge and attitude test on homemaking given to senior girls. Miss Nussbaum has been awarded a specially designed silver charm from General Mills, sponsor of the event.

Two weeks to the day after the opening of the 40th state legislature, Rep. Nels J. Smith sponsored the 200th bill in the House of Representatives. Smith, 29, who is serving his fourth term in the House, also introduced the four preceding four bills. Smith is chairman of the House Transportation, Bridges and Highways Committee.

February 3, 1994

The Wyoming Game and Fish is accepting comments to discuss the proposed population objective and hunt area changes for the Black Hills Elk Herd Unit. The current objective for the Black Hills Elk herd is 300 head, Recent estimates place the population at 450-500 animals, so they are proposing to raise the objective to 500.

Ray McCoy, Hulett, has donated two derbies to assist the Crook County Museum in its effort to authentically attire their Sundance Kid mannequin. McCoy has over 60 derbies in his private collection.
