Wyoming Highway Patrol (WHP) wants the public to be aware that it has recently been notified of a phone call scam circulating in this region.
The scammers are contacting people to state that a relative has been involved in a motor vehicle crash and arrested for driving under the influence. Victims are then told that the relative is in need of cash for bail and attorney fees.
According to WHP, the callers are replicating (or “spoofing”) phone numbers to make it appear that they are coming from a legitimate law enforcement office in Dubois or other parts of Wyoming and surrounding states.
WHP reminds the public that it does not, and will not, request any payment over the phone. Anyone who has received a questionable phone call soliciting funds should contact their local law enforcement or government agency to verify the information received.
