For the last three decades, Superbowl Sunday has kicked off with our own, local tradition: a bracing run through the streets of Sundance. The 30th anniversary of Freeze Your Fanny takes place this weekend and will once again be the chilliest fundraiser of the year, following the same route and with all the same reasons to take part. The crowd packed in the Sundance High School Gym for a full night of fun as the Sundance basketball teams and FCCLA hosted Family Fun Night on Saturday. The Lady Bulldogs opened up the night of play hosting conference rival Big Horn. The Lady Bulldogs and Rams got off to a slow start in the first quarter trying to figure each other out while trying to get their own offenses moving. The Sundance boy’s basketball team split conference games this week, taking a win over the Wright Panthers and losing to the Big Horn Rams. The boys travelled to Wright on Thursday to open up conference play against the Panthers. The Panthers graduated 10 seniors last year and were hoping to gain another win on their rough 1-12 season, however the Bulldogs came into the match on a four-game winning streak. Upton/Sundance’s Jaydon Caylor, Moorcroft’s Rowdy Pfeil and Hulett’s Jhett Letellier were all named as alternate selections of the North team for the 47th annual Wyoming Shrine Bowl. The North Team will be coached by Aaron Papich of Powell. The yearly event, which started in 1974, is aimed at recognizing Wyoming’s top high school football players as well as providing financial support for and recognition of Shriners Hospitals for Children. The “Little Dribbler” Program began three years ago and has been growing ever since. In 2017-18 we had 18 athletes begin this program in K-2. This year in 2019-20 we have 48 athletes K-2. The purpose of this program is to teach ball handling fundamentals in a fun engaging environment. The students think of this as an obstacle course for basketball and they get very excited to perform during halftime of the Varsity game. The Sundance High School trap team swept the board at its first fall state event, ending the season ranked in first place. The Sundance boys’ basketball team was back on the road this past week as they traveled to NSI and Hill City. The entire Bulldog bench saw some playing time on Friday night in the 53-11 victory over NSI. Putting together a solid first half of play, Sundance went into the halftime break with the 30-3 lead. The Sundance wrestling team completed this past Friday at the 14-team Dogie Invitational in Newcastle. When the day was completed, the grapplers had two place winners. Junior Owen Haiar took home the title at 126 lbs. with three pins and a 9-2 decision in the finals. The other place winner was heavyweight wrestler Dawson Flahaven who placed fifth with three wins by fall. The boys opened up play in Sundance on Thursday night, facing off against the Newcastle Dogies. Members of the Sundance wrestling team participated in the Tiger Invitational in Lusk on Friday. Two Bulldog wrestlers placed in the top five of their weight classes. The Upton-Sundance Patriots season came to a close this weekend as the Patriots fell to Cokeville 7-16. In a rematch of last year’s semifinal game, the Patriots were hoping for a different outcome, but the Cokeville Panthers’ disciplined defense shut down the explosive Patriot offense by limiting their big gains to three to four yards at a time, forcing the Patriots to string together short gains with little momentum.
