Graduation Day for this year’s Sundance seniors will be taking place this Sunday, May 17 at 4 p.m. and the whole community will have the chance to tune in to KYDT 103.1 or head to the Sundance High School Facebook page to watch or listen live as graduates receive their honors. The community is also encouraged to line the streets following the ceremony to take part in the graduation parade. The ceremony itself is reserved for students and their families. SHS Senior Joleen Pollat was named the Brenda Maynard Walters Memorial Standing Tall award winner for 2020. The award, named in memory of Walters, is given by former classmates and family members to a member of the senior class who embodies the spirit Brenda was known for during her life. Even though students are no longer attending school on campus, Crook County School District cooks continue to provide nourishing meals remotely as well. In Moorcroft, the kitchen staff and support help supply approximately 500 lunch bags each week. Each bag contains six different items for students. The bus drivers deliver this to pick-up points each Thursday. They also use a pick-up location at the MK8 school from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for those not on a route. Due to the COVID-19 school closure, and restrictions still in place, Sundance Elementary School will not be doing Kindergarten screening this year. They are asking parents to come during the allotted time according to the first letter of last name on Wed., May 20 to register their incoming Kindergarten student. The Harper Memorial Scholarship committee is pleased to announce the 2020-2021 scholarship recipients. The Orville D. Harper Revocable Trust and the Wanda J. Harper Revocable Trust established this scholarship fund, for which Crook County School District #1 is a beneficiary. Crook County School District is scheduled to resume classes on April 6; however, says Superintendent Mark Broderson, the COVID-19 outbreak is a fluid situation. Sundance FCCLA members, Sherry Negaard and Nevada Gill, with birthday party supplies donated by the community for their project. Each pack is equipped with a cake mix, a can of frosting, a 13x9 pan, decorative items, candles, napkins and plates. They exceeded the original goal of 25 bags by gathering 40 completed birthday bags. The party packs will be donated to the Crook County Food Pantry this week. Sundance High School will play host to its first full-scale musical in a quarter decade next weekend, says Teresa Preisner, music teacher. “Flapper” is a comedy tribute to the 1920s. “I choose this musical because we are in the our own ‘roaring 20’s’,” says Preisner. “I have such great kids in choir and this is a humorous, ‘madcapped’ show that can really show them off. U.S. Senator Mike Enzi, R-Wyo., is encouraging Wyoming high school students to apply to be a Senate page for the summer sessions in Washington, D.C. Enzi said he is fortunate to have the opportunity to sponsor a young adult from Wyoming to serve in each of the two summer sessions. At the recommendation of Superintendent Mark Broderson, the Crook County School District Board of Trustees has chosen to delay adoption of a new technology policy due to concerns that its wording is too vague. At Monday’s meeting, the board heard that members of staff are concerned it would allow searches of personal cell phones.
