It is time to register for kindergarten for the 2023-2024 school year. Sundance Elementary School registration paperwork is available at the school office. Registration packets were sent to all Sundance preschools as well. Children entering kindergarten for the 2023-2024 school year must be age five on or before Aug. 1, 2023. Children who turn five between Aug. 1 and Sept. 15, 2023 will need to be screened for readiness by CCSD#1 prior to enrollment. The University of Wyoming lists seven students from Crook County on the 2022 fall semester President’s Honor Roll. Students are: Katrina Bauman and Joseph Kennah of Hulett; Tianne M. Fischbach, Audrey Lynn Merwin and Shania N. Miller of Moorcroft; and Ella S. Bifulco and Sherry Negaard of Sundance. The President’s Honor Roll consists of regularly enrolled undergraduates who earned a 4.0 (“A”) grade-point average for the semester. Aladdin’s Molly Ryan, a senior majoring in social work at Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa, earned a spot on the Academic Dean’s List for the fall 2022 semester and further earned the designation of Collegiate Scholar. The Dean’s List is comprised of students who have achieved a semester grade point average of 3.50 or above while carrying a minimum of 12 graded hours. Students gathered for a brief assembly at Sundance Elementary School last week to honor one of their own for being a finalist in the Wyoming Agriculture in the Classroom bookmark award. Of the 13 finalists chosen from second to fifth graders all around the state for the award, an impressive five were from right here in Crook County. Range, in conjunction with the Foundation for Rural Service, is again sponsoring a contest for high school students to win what has been referred to as a “trip of a lifetime”. One high school student will be selected to receive an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. to participate in the Foundation for Rural Service Youth Tour, May 31-June 4, 2023. The future of education in Wyoming could be based on “personalized learning”, if the state opts to follow through with the recommendations released last week by the RIDE Education Advisory Group. Crook County kids with special needs have for many years had the chance to train and compete in sports ranging from skiing and bowling to basketball and track, winning medals and building life experiences with wide smiles on many a young face. FFA horse evaluation team takes on the NILE On Oct. 16 and 17, the Sundance/Bearlodge FFA horse evaluation team traveled to Billings, Montana to partake in the NILE livestock show FFA/4 H judging contests. Autumn Groth placed fourth in the senior division in horse and Tessa Sanderson was high individual in the junior division. Sundance High School music teacher Teresa Preisner met with Niles Harris last week in Deadwood, prior to a very special Veterans Day Program this November. Harris was the inspiration for "8th of November", a song recorded by country music duo Big & Rich in 2006 to honor veterans of the Vietnam War. Four students performed with the Northeast District Junior High Honor Choir on Friday, and eight with the Northeast District Junior High Honor Band, at a concert in Big Horn. The students were among a select group chosen for the performance from Big Horn, Sheridan, Upton, Newcastle, Moorcroft and both Gillette junior high schools. Students from the 4th and 7th grades of the Hulett School, taught by Anna Backen and Josh Willems respectively, enjoyed visiting the Vore Buffalo Jump on October 5. These students study Wyoming History, and the Vore Buffalo Jump allows students to step into the past and really imagine what life would have been like during the period in our history when Native Americans trapped large numbers of bison in the Vore site sinkhole. According to this year’s accountability scores, all of Crook County’s schools are at least partially meeting the state’s expectations and have not seen a significant drop in performance scores, despite the disruptions caused by COVID-19. Accountability measures have not been determined since the 2018-19 school year, a two-year pause caused by the pandemic.
