Let go of your dreams, ladies and gentleman, for as a state we have attained the loftiest of heights and may never again outdo ourselves. This Christmas, a product that hails from Wyoming has filled a coveted space on the Goop holiday shopping guide. If you’re wondering what in blazes a Goop might be, I’m not sure whether to feel guilt that I’m about to steal your innocence or pity that you’ve been missing out on capitalism’s most sincere sacrifice to lunacy. It is, to cut a long story sho...
I moved to Wyoming in 2010, hoping to become a Wyoming resident and to retire in this beautiful state. I support the conservative thinking and the freedoms we enjoy here. I am originally from South Dakota, where, like Wyoming, it’s still legal to target practice on your own property. Those of us who have relocated to this state did so because it is an improvement over our previous location. I can’t think of one thing that a person could bring to Wyoming, from their home state, that would make this a better place to live, except maybe grandkids....
“If the foundations are destroyed, What can the righteous do?” (Psalm 11:3). What are we living for? What makes us tick? Why do we do the things we do and not what we should do? Is this some great theoretical essay into solving all our personal issues? Nope. It is a sincere, simplistic view that our actions and resulting beliefs come from what we pour into our lives. The foundation from which we stand is formed and defined by what goes into it and is best influenced by the One God Who created us. We are under a constant bombardment of wor...
I am writing in regards to the article in the November 21 Sundance Times written by Michael Illiano about the RINO website. In response to the comments in the article made by Gail Symons, yes, the Republican Party is an ideology, an ideology of “timeless truths,” which is right off the front page of the Wyoming Republican Platform. The Wyoming Republican Party has a platform which honors Biblical Judeo-Christian principles of morality, the US Constitution, the Wyoming Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. The Platform supports sma...
Few things make me happier than crossovers between my culture and yours, but this week’s combo is the most bizarre I’ve seen in a while. It involves house paint, spellings and the nation’s favorite sketch show – oh, and a newspaper, because all good things need to involve newspapers. The paint in question is a luxury brand called Farrow & Ball, which hails from my home county of Dorset and has been churning out wall coverings since 1946 that are based on historic archives and the natural...
Bickering politicians is a simple fact of life, but sometimes what they’re arguing about really makes you think. I found myself thoroughly baffled this week to discover that my home county’s council is discussing the idea of making Dorset a national park. As far as I can tell (and I have done as much research as can reasonably be expected, which includes but is not limited to a quick glance at Wikipedia) this national park would encompass the entire southern portion of the county and a chu...
Well here’s a thing I wasn’t expecting to say: the mystery of the yeti has been solved. The answer is not disappointing, either, because it turns out there really have been yetis wandering the Himalayan woods all along. Arguably the most surprising thing is that the person who revealed the solution has known what a yeti is for half a century. You’d need to be familiar with Sir David Attenborough, the man who basically invented the nature documentary, for that to make sense. Sir David is a natio...
It’s tough to know people are watching your every move; it’s difficult to make decisions that you know will please some more than others. But when you’re dealing with the public’s money, there’s nothing more important than being open about what you’re doing with it. For that reason, we would like to offer our sincere appreciation to Joey Kanode of the Crook County Medical Services District for his insistence that the Board of Trustees keeps its work as transparent as legally possible. As reported in last week’s issue, Kanode raised concer...
Dear Editor, The CCMSD (Crook County Medical Services District) Board regular meeting took place on October 29, 2019. I would like to share a few positive items from that meeting and from things we’ve done this year. Strategic planning meeting October 18, 2019. Twenty-three “stakeholders” from the community, staff, board, etc., took part in the meeting. The trainers worked with us to set short-term and long-term goals for the Hospital District and medical area. We had very positive input from those attending. We would like to thank all who atte...
Contrary to the stereotype of a young British girl, I did not grow up wanting to be a princess. I imagined it would be a dull existence unsuited to my life ambitions. It would be a different story if I had developed an early interest in fascinators, dresses and shoes, but I’m still not good at those things. I wanted to be a starfighter pilot on the Battlestar Galactica or dodging mortar shells as I reported the news from warzones, like pioneering journalist Kate Adie. These things are c...
Purposed “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is man’s all” (Ecclesiastes 12:13). The Book of Ecclesiastes was written by King Solomon, who could be considered the wisest man who has ever lived. It provides information relating to the futility of life apart from God and directs people to seek true happiness in Him alone. I have taken ten personal observations from this book to encourage you through this limbo we call life. 1. Pleasure will always come but will never last. 2. Wrong motiv...
As costumes go, it was remarkably close to the real thing. On my eighth Halloween as a human being, I marched into the school gym wearing a homemade version of Jack Pumpkinhead from Return to Oz. To the surprise of nobody present, I waltzed back out with the grand prize. If you’ve never seen the movie, I don’t advise hunting it down – it’s terrifying. To this day, I can’t look at a chicken without expecting it to talk, and don’t get me started on princesses who think it’s fine to keep heads in...
Retirement is a milestone many look forward to but do not want to confront. It is estimated that only 40 percent of working adults have calculated the income they will need for retirement, according to the Employee Benefit Research Institute. This is an alarmingly low number because without a goal, many could be undercutting their monthly savings they need to be secure. Of course, you can’t predict your future, but you can commit to save yourself from retirement financial disaster. For many of us, life is all about working hard and spending t...
Even now, I continue to stumble across unexpected links between my nation and yours – some of them more direct than others. My most recent discovery is about as personal as it gets, because it involves the specific area of my home town where I spent most of the weekends of my youth. I speak of Poole Quay, one the bustling center point of the town’s maritime industry but now a popular recreation site for tourists and locals alike. Today, it’s lined with pubs and cafes, the Sunseeker luxury yacht...
I was for some reason discouraged from clambering on the bouncy castle at the Pumpkin Patch festival this weekend, and I was apparently “too old” for the pony rides. Even so, I had a lovely time perusing squash and watching a clever man make shapes out of stretchy balloons. I’ve always enjoyed the fall, even before I was introduced to the idea of pumpkin spice. The temperatures are cool enough to enjoy the outdoors (I can’t help it, I’m still a delicate Brit when it comes to sun), the land is co...
Technology is amazing. It helps us see our front door when we aren’t home. It allows us to have vacuums roam around our house cleaning while we are at work. It also provides us with communication and messaging tools that give us access to information in real time. We are more in-tune with our politics and our world than ever before, but sometimes this comes at a price. Our world has lost civility. If a disagreement arises, there is automatically an enemy on the other side of the argument rather than an opposing point of view to consider. T...
Well, that’s embarrassing. According to a recent poll on the most difficult-to-pronounce place names in the UK, I’ve been calling a nearby town the wrong thing my entire life. How was I to know that Frome is really “froom”, instead of how it’s spelled? I’ve had chuckle-worthy moments on these shores when discovering my pronunciation skills are not up to snuff. I didn’t understand that Arkansas is a completely different word to Kansas, for example, and in my previous life I was literal in how I p...
I want you to be wise in what is good, and simple concerning evil. Romans 16:19 Simple is a good word and can take us far. In the context of Romans 16:19 it conveys the meaning of innocence, unmixed and pure as in wine or metal. This simple, pure innocence holds what is good and plainly see what is bad. It is the result of the wisdom of good embracing the totality of evil. Life is straightforward if only we are sensible enough to realize that good and evil must be kept separate. Simplicity (the return to innocence) begins with the repentance of...
Dear Editor: Although it has been four years since we moved to Crook County, we recently attended our first Sundance High School football game. We were not prepared for what we experienced. Expecting the typical field rivalry and friction, attitudes and social drama among students and intense, aggressive players, we found none of this. The U.S. Patriots showed exemplary sportsmanship toward the Lusk team, obviously cultured by good coaching and school leadership. The students that we observed, sat among and socialized with were all cheerful,...
During my time as Treasurer, I have seen thousands of individuals across the State of Wyoming locate money being held by our Unclaimed Property Division. Some of these checks have been in the six-figure range, and the rightful owner may not have ever been paid if not for the Unified Unclaimed Property laws in our great state. I have seen first-hand how effective this program can be, yet our federal government doesn’t want to turn over nearly $26 billion in savings bonds (an estimated $45 million belonging to Wyomingites) that have reached m...
I suspect my pups will be downright distraught when we reach the end of this summer of long walks on green grass – but I can tell you for sure who won’t be. There’s a herd of squirrels in my back yard that is quickly evolving into an angry mob, and I’m worried about their nuts. I should probably start from the beginning. As we all know, I have a storied history with bushy-tailed varmints, both here and back in the homeland. I have loved them since I was a teenager in chocolate-brown trouser...
Dear Editor, I am writing this letter in an effort to end the stigma that people suffering from mental health illnesses are dangerously violent and unpredictable. According to Mentalhealth.gov, “The vast majority of people with mental health problems are no more likely to be violent than anyone else. Most people with mental illness are not violent and only 3 to 5 percent of violent acts can be attributed to individuals living with a serious mental illness. “In fact, people with severe mental illnesses are over 10 times more likely to be vic...
It’s the little things that get you when it comes to cultural differences, and the topics on which you know just about enough to be dangerous. The husband and I thought we were talking the same language when it came to the renovation of our bedroom – but we absolutely weren’t. When I say I know enough to be dangerous, I am referring to two things. Firstly, I know very little about construction. Secondly, what I do know is based on an industry with different climate needs, culture, history and a...
The Wyoming State Forestry Division located in Newcastle serves in an advisory capacity for assisting private landowners with timber land management planning and project supervision. As a vehicle to help educate, involve and assist private landowners with the challenging and demanding task of putting sustainable forestry management practices on the ground, the Wyoming State Forestry Division supports voluntary landowner forest management organizations like the American Tree Farm System or simply Tree Farm, a nationwide forest stewardship...
Property moguls with exotic taste and some cash to splash may be interested in a special something now available on the outskirts of my home town. The property itself is a delight of traditional architecture, but its true appeal is something you won’t find anywhere else. Located in a secluded back yard, the white-bricked exterior with thatched roof hides a recently renovated selection of rooms, each spacious and modern with a huge amount of storage but also touches of the old world, such as wood...
