  • State mask order goes into effect

    Sarah Pridgeon|Dec 10, 2020

A statewide mask order goes into effect this week in an effort to address an increase in hospitalizations and deaths due to COVID-19 while keeping businesses open, according to an announcement from Governor Mark Gordon. Unless the order is revoked before it expires on January 8, face coverings will be required for the next month in most public places. “Our state and those surrounding us are facing a hospital capacity crisis that now compels us to take additional action. All through the fall, W...

  • Plans for solid waste district rekindled

    Sarah Pridgeon|Dec 10, 2020

Several years ago, an attempt was made to bring the county together under the umbrella of a solid waste district. It failed, but a rekindled version could see a district formed to encompass only those parts of the county that feel they would benefit from the existence of a local landfill. Mayor Dick Claar of Moorcroft stood before the county commissioners last week with letters of support in hand from the towns of Sundance, Pine Haven and Moorcroft. All three are in favor of establishing a solid waste district, he said, but “Hulett is not in fa...

  • Main Street lot to become art gallery

    Sarah Pridgeon|Dec 10, 2020

If anyone within the Sundance community objects to a gallery opening at the end of Main Street, they did not attend last week’s public hearing to say so. The Sundance City Council will move ahead with selling the corner lot to local artist Bruce Speidel. The lot in question used to house the North Pole Meat Locker. It came into the city’s possession after plans to construct a veterans’ hall fell through; in 2019, the council opted to spend $25,000 to purchase the land outright. It has since been used as a pocket park. Speidel approached the c...

    Sarah Pridgeon|Dec 10, 2020

The City of Sundance is moving ahead with its plan for the Crook County Sheriff’s Office to start providing law enforcement coverage in the new year. The contract has been reviewed and the council has directed City Attorney Mark Hughes to move ahead with the necessary steps to allow Circuit Court to handle ordinance cases. “I don’t have any real concerns with it,” said Hughes of the contract under review. However, he noted that it does not contain information about enforcing city ordinances, which is something the Sheriff’s Office does not have...

Seniors around the county will be able to take advantage of the Crook County Senior Services’ meal program this month completely free of charge, thanks to a donation from the Powder River Foundation. “The Powder River Foundation contacted me this week and they have given us a grant to pay for seniors’ meals for the month of December,” says Jenna Ellsbury, Program Director. “We still have to pay our portion, so we are still using the state and federal funds, but for the seniors themselves it’s a suggested donation of $4 per meal and they are co...

  • Community needs assessment highlights poverty issues

    Sarah Pridgeon|Dec 10, 2020

The population of Crook County is growing and the community is doing better than state averages when it comes to unemployment, food insecurity and household income, according to an assessment that was presented to the Crook County Medical Services District Board of Trustees last week. However, according to Jody Shields of Align, which conducted the Community Needs Assessment in this area, low-income households are still experiencing issues with finding employment at a livable wage, affording healthcare and housing. The assessment is used to...

  • Our View

    Dec 10, 2020

Whether you love masks, hate them or can’t work out which end goes over your ear, we can still agree on one thing: this pandemic has been mishandled. As Christmas approaches, we are left in a situation where neighbor has locked horns with neighbor and the anger levels don’t have much further to rise. Last week, the county was placed under a mask order and those who do not believe in the use of face coverings were instantly livid. This is understandable, but we are not here to argue the merits of social distancing because that’s not the point of...

  • CCMSD discusses problematic donation

    Sarah Pridgeon|Dec 10, 2020

Does Crook County Medical Services District (CCMSD) have an obligation to pay back money that was donated to shore up its finances during a difficult time? The Board of Trustees were unable to reach a consensus on this issue, which centers around a contribution from the Crook County Hospital Foundation (CCHF) that was made a number of years ago. The problem, explained Trustee Connie Lindmier, is that the foundation earmarked $345,000 that was collected through public donations for the Hulett Clinic. Today, as the clinic enters construction,...

  • Family Dollar works with church on sewer line

    Sarah Pridgeon|Dec 10, 2020

Thanks to an unexpected opportunity for teamwork, utility work for the Family Dollar store in Sundance will also benefit St. Paul’s Catholic Church. When plans for a sewer line were revealed a few months ago, the church realized it could piggyback the project and provide water to its property adjacent to the store. Ken Rathbun of Bearlodge Engineering spoke with the council last week on behalf of owner David Murdoch, who was unable to be present. The new Family Dollar store is under construction, he said, and an agreement has been reached f...

Plans have been submitted for final construction and design of the tank itself, she said, a...
