Jamie Jessen casts her ballot on Tuesday morning for the 2022 General Election. The race that received perhaps the most attention, both locally and statewide, was that of Ogden Driskill, who faced a write-in opponent for the Senate District #1 seat via the "Roger is Right" campaign. The unofficial results saw Driskill looking set to retain his seat (Campbell County results not available at press time). Other contested positions included the mayorship of Sundance, in which race incumbent Paul...
Commission moves to abandon two portions of county road By The county commissioners have moved to officially abandon portions of two roads in the Moskee area at the request of the landowner across whose property they run. The two partial roads – the Cold Springs (County Road 21 or the Black & Yellow Road) and Lost Canyon (County Road 807) – cross Moskee Land Corporation property. At a hearing last week, the Crook County Commissioners heard responses to the objections that were filed in response to the request for abandonment from Michael Fre...
Reflecting on the city’s lack of success in securing American Rescue Plan Act funding to pay for several important infrastructure projects around town, the Sundance City Council has agreed that it’s worth giving it another go. “You could say we’re the first loser,” said Public Works Director Mac Erickson as he reported the situation to the council, explaining that it was a tough group of applicants to compete against and the city’s projects were actually pretty high up the list. Unfortunately, there was a lot less money to give out than there...
It's time to apply for the second – and final – phase of the Old Stoney rejuvenation project, Andrea Wood of the Crook County Museum District announced last week. Old Stoney has been open to the public as a cultural center for a while now, but only two of its three floors are complete. Still awaiting the funding needed to fix it up is the top floor, which was the auditorium back when Old Stoney was a school. On Tuesday, Wood requested the support of the City of Sundance in applying for the Wyo...
Winterfest will be back this winter – but not on Main Street. It’s a shame, said Jamie Jessen as she addressed the city council on behalf of the Sundance Chamber of Commerce. But at this time, it’s the only way to keep the popular event going. Jessen and chamber president Sheryl Klocker visited the council to iron out some of the finer details for the event, which centers around the sport of ski joring. Winterfest is scheduled for February 4, 2023, Jessen said, and will be taking place at the county fairgrounds. The reason for this, she expla...

1 Years Ago November 9, 1922 Returns yesterday morning made positive the re-election of Senator John B. Kendrick over Hon. Frank W. Mondell by a majority exceeding three thousand. In Crook County, the democrats have elected Lee McWethy over Earl Banks for treasurer, and possibly Thos. A. Nicholas will lose to Bert Waddell, as J.A. Stewart leads by eleven votes. Road conditions have somewhat interfered with the mails this week. John Semsey started to Spearfish with the Dodge Monday but after making about seven miles returned to Sundance for...

Driver inattention or a possible medical condition are being investigated as possible causes of a fatal crash early Thursday morning. On November 3, a fatal crash occurred at milepost 1 on US Highway 212 near the Wyoming-South Dakota State line. At 6:04 a.m., Wyoming Highway Patrol troopers were notified of a collision involving two commercial vehicles. Dear Editor, Recently, Hu Jintao was escorted from The Great Hall of the People during the Chinese Communist Party Congress for, apparently, speaking out against the Party. How sad for the 79-year-old to lose the support of the party he has belonged to his whole adult life for failure to toe the party line. I suspect Ogden Driskill and Liz Cheney can commiserate with Mr. Hu. Brad McKim Dear Editor, Once again, the will of the Republican voters is not being upheld by the Republican GOP committee members. As a Republican voter it upsets me that...
I write to you this week as a true American. Yes, I can guess what you're thinking, but it's true. I know I already pledged to the flag and took my tests and learned lots of new things, and I already hung my first flag. You're right, I've been living here and partaking of American traditions and lifestyle, and I was doing that even before I was granted my citizenship. But today, I did something that I have not been allowed to do for over a decade of living in this nation. I voted. I made my way...

JACKSON —There are no glaciers in Yellowstone National Park. That’s according to Yellowstone Superintendent Cam Sholly. Speaking with the Jackson Hole Daily on Friday morning about the summer season, he responded to a UNESCO report that said climate change would cause some glaciers in World Heritage Sites to disappear by 2050. Glaciers in Yellowstone were included in that list. That was an error, Sholly said. The superintendent said Yellowstone had told UNESCO as much. “There’s definitely places in the national park system in North America wher...
